I have to say when I see those tortoise shells in homes I love them, but I saw some at an antique market recently and in person they creeped me out. To each his own!
my husband was just reading an article in the LAtimes this morning about a landowner, shooting 3 zebras that wandered onto his property from the Hearst estate in Cambria, CA.
He and his neighbor have taken the bodies to a local taxidermist.
So while I love a zebra rug, this sort of hit home. kind of gross.
Well, I am on the fenceon this one. In my own home, the antlers are resin. Not any animals, I do have a few tortoise shells, but they were found in the woods and were already shed! I am guilty of having a zebra hide or two pillows, covered ottoman and frame. But no other animal taxidermy in the house. However, there are some great Natural History txidermist pieces out there. So, I am not sure.....
I think it has to be considered and to each his or her own??
Although I do love the thought of a zebra of my own, but maybe real and running! The one featured is absolutely incredible, imagine being surrounded by a wild herd. Fascinating!!!!!
Having seen zebras in the wild, I would say that this sucks. Deer heads, I've seen so many, but at least people eat the deer. Not for me. Surprised the woman doesn't have a stuffed pony somewhere around the house.
A few deer heads or something of the like, high up on the wall in a study or lodge is fine. Not really my thing, but it doesn't bother me.
However, THIS thing bothers me! Can you imagine trying to navigate the dark halls past it in the middle of the night on your way to the bathroom?? And you'd better hope that your friends don't get too obnoxious at your parties... or else it's destined to become like a carousel horse!
Agree with Jenny- WHY do we need to have multiple stuffed animals in a CITY apartment?
I get the whole deer head thing, i do. I can even get into it if you live in the right house for it, but stuffed dogs, birds, peacocks, squirrels, and a whole freakin zebra are not something I would EVER consider. EVER.
Unacceptable. Not only is it unethical, can you imagine the bacteria and other creatures that live on that zebra? How would you clean it? I know an "exceptional" taxidermist who has won numerous awards. He is very strange and repeatedly gets in verbal disputes with people around town. Guess it takes a special person. Julie
i can maybe get to the point of shed antlers as a chandelier, and i even like a fur rug or cowhide once in a while, but a whole animal corpse in the parlor or dining room, never mind the bedroom, is just perverse.
there's a lot of good sculpture out there, even african 'airport' stuff, so that it is insane to spend what this must cost for what is now an undead and unreal thing.
was a wonderful fad years ago to have a merry-go-round horse in the house, or one of those lalanne sheep, which are great fun.
next, this woman is going to run out and buy one of those preserved human beings--or become one, like the guy who invented the process is going to be.
oy, oy. and she'll write the book which begins, ' i had a farm in canarsie.....'
robert browning's poem, 'that's my last duchess' was plenty.
(aarrff to cholo, anyway--but don't tell him about this at all).
I like it. I have shabby chic with a deer head on the wall. judy
ReplyDeletedead animals will never be caught dead in my house. not a fan.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit I love it, but don't like the idea of killing things. Kori xoxo
ReplyDeleteI don't mind a few antlers here and there or even a mounted deer head, but just something about the whole stuffed zebra makes me sad.
ReplyDeleteI say yes to books, but hmmm, not to taxidermy.
ReplyDeleteIt is fascinating...and an art in it's own right....but I prefer my creatures living.

Truthfully, I've seen them used in designs and though they were beautiful as a whole... but you don't see any dead animals in my house either.
ReplyDeleteJennifer- creep factor, well put!

p.s. Thanks for the mention!
I like small doses of it but an actual Zebra, I'd have nightmares for sure. What do you think sweet Valorie?
ReplyDeleteHope you 2 dashing folk are having a good week & staying toasty warm? xo xo
NO! No dead animals in my house, EVER!
ReplyDeleteWho wants their living room to look like a diorama at the Museum of Natural History?
ReplyDeleteOh, how horrible, tasteless unless you are perhaps Sarah Palin....

I'm afraid I love animals, and although I'm not a vegan, I don't think I could do the zebra thing. I'd love to have a real zebra in my yard.
ReplyDeleteVictoria, you just couldn't help yourself could you?
ReplyDeleteTimeless, sometimes chic, sometimes kitsch, for me it would err on the ironic.

Not a big fan. There's something about paralyzed animals staring at me that makes me uncomfortable. :)
ReplyDelete* I am an ANIMAL LOVER... BIG TIME!!!
ReplyDelete* SO, my question is: What will the "owner" of this once-beautiful, sweet animal provide her taxidermist for "NEXT TIME"? Her HUSBAND?
One should NEVER kill what one cannot or will not eat... This is IMHO...) Period.

i mean, why? that's my question. i've seen the rest of her place...and it's filled with animalia.
