Beetle Vases

I saw these in The New York Times. The unusual form and gem like beauty and craftsmanship is astounding. They are the work of Thomas Eyck.

This installation of 63 Beetle Vases by Thomas Eyck is museum worthy and priced at € 28400.00

Made of porcelain with the most remarkable glaze, each individual Beetle Vase goes for around 500 Euros

The colors are remarkable

Each beetle looks like a piece of fine jewelry

Just luscious!

Would you put a flower in one of these Beetle Vases by Thomas Eyck?

My Dolce Vita - Keep A Diary, Hon, Because One Day It Will Keep You

It's perfect weather to put the top down, and take a ride to a pretty place and maybe stay the night. Bring along a good book to read. Pick a place with a great view, and a little luxury. Turn the clocks back this weekend and enjoy an extra hour on your little jaunt and getaway.

During the summer I read a fascinating book called My Dolce Vita, written by Jean Govoni Salvadore. It is a memoir by a woman who has lived (and is still living) a fascinating life in Italy. The Paris born Salvadore spent decades of keeping diaries, a practice she first picked up as a schoolgirl in England. She quips. “I always like to say what Mae West said: ‘Keep a diary, hon, because one day it will keep you.' "

Do you keep a diary? Are you planning to write your autobiography anytime soon?

Madame Jean looks over her domain - She took the advice of Mae West

Madame Jean had two major jobs in her life, one for 20 years of looking after a battery of celebrities while handling the Italian press for Howard Hughes era TWA. There is not one celebrity you can think of that she didn't meet on the tarmac when they arrived in Italy.

Jean Salvadore with Richard Burton at the airport when she worked for TWA - My Dolce Vita is a book that  is jam packed with great photos from her private archives of old Hollywood glam that you won't see anywhere else

She also survived World War II in Italy saying that seeing the Allies march into Rome that put an end to the German Occupation in 1944 was by far the happiest day of her life. “You would think it would be the day my son was born or the day I got married, but it was the day the Allies arrived. It was the most thrilling thing I have ever seen — better than any movie. We all went crazy."

Salvadore has deftly handled the monumental PR chores at the glamorous Villa d’Este, Lake Como’s (Italy) majestic five-star retreat, for the past 43 years. This is old school European luxury where royalty and every classic Hollywood star often stopped. It was a place where discretion and privacy were insured, along with glorious views and grand accommodations.

Old school glam at Villa d'Este

My arm chair travel takes me there, ensconced in one of the private villas. I've brought along "My Dolce Vita" to read on the terrace, basking in the warm Autumn sun, sipping a vodka Negroni.
Pick up a copy yourself and be transported. It's also a great gift to give to the book reader in your life. Get in now for the coming holidays.

My private villa st Villa d'Este

Standing on the banks of the Lake, this private villa was built on the grounds of Villa d’Este in 1814 by Caroline of Brunswick, Princess of Wales and future Queen of England, to house Count and Countess Pino, the Villa’s former proprietors.
The entry way to the three floor villa
The accommodations in this stately 7,000  square foot getaway are distributed over three floors. Care to join Alberto and me? I think there is plenty of room! We could give tango lessons n the hall.
The pretty living room is classically decorated - I love the small sofa with the bullion fringe
Luxurious decor is the keynote in the living room, dining room, sleeping quarters, and in the spacious, luminous modern kitchen.
Check out the modern kitchen - Anyone feeling like cooking?
No two rooms are exactly alike and each is filled with antiques and art.
The dining room in my villa
The views from the villa’s spectacular windows are simply breathtaking and frame memories that will last a lifetime.
Even this bathroom has a view

One of the bedrooms - LOVE the Regency style bed

A view into another pretty bedroom - and look a flat screen for the guys to watch futbol!
Many subtle touches, the utmost discretion, and impeccable service are the hallmarks of Villa d’Este.Thank goodness, no pesty paparazzi!
My terrace where I will be sipping vodka Negronis and reading My Dolce Vita, while I live my own sweet life

Autumn on Lake Como! What a great place to turn the clocks back this weekend!

When It's Good It Lasts Forever

Every so often something  is so stylish it has universal appeal and staying power. We may groan and moan and say we get sick of it because it seems overexposed. Yet, we get strangely drawn to it, feeling comfortable as with an old friend. It never let's us down. It's always stylish. Just a small jolt of it infuses any room with the rare combination of traditional and classic with the modern and hip.

Some things never go out of style
And so it is with something so well designed it seems to stay around forever.  It's always stylish. Whether you add a small jolt of it, or cover the walls with it, it makes any room feel fresh and updated,

Always in style

Add it and your room somehow says "designer". And because it is a designer item, it is expensive, and even after years of being around it has not been greatly discounted.

Get it discounted HERE

But if you look on Etsy, you can find it at good prices, but still a little pricey. Leave to good old Target to have had a knock off for at least year that is still available on the web site. This is the best bang for the buck - you get TWO for $24.99!

Tangerine Tango

I have been predicting that orange would be the color of the year for 2012, and it's getting closer! Pantone announced its Spring 2012 colors, with Tangerine Tango at the top of the list. It's a vivid orange, but not garish or neon. The new 2012 Spring colors are fashion trend forecasts, but as we all know fashion and home decor are linked like two hot tango dancers.

You know I love the name of this orange: Tangerine Tango. I use orange a lot in my home, and for decor and styling jobs. And I wear it too. The orange Hermes box has been a color inspiration for years and years.

Go HERE to see a great round up using Hermes boxes

After the last two years of turquoise and hot pink being the colors of their respective years, I feel it's time for orange to be next.

You can use Tangerine Tango as an accent to infuse a little energy into a room. Orange is actually a very easy color to introduce into a room.

You could go big and paint a room in Tangerine Tango. An entrance hall would look pretty fabulous, and bedroom would certainly be spicy.

Orange pairs well with pink, so if you went for the 2011 color of the year,  just add something orange.

And if you did the 2010 color of the year, adding orange is easy peasy.

So what to do  you think? Will Tangerine Orange be the 2012 color of the year?

All Saints Day

It's a beautiful day today in New Orleans. We are going to the cemetery to partake in a ritual here today, All Saints Day. We are going to visit our dear friend Miss Anne, and meet her son Chip there, and then go to lunch. The cemetery used be someplace creepy before I moved to New Orleans, but now it has become a way of living life. Below is a previous post I did about All Saints Day. I'm sure everyone of you have someone who has passed away, and who you remember on this day and everyday.

Our first trip to New Orleans in 1999 coincided with Halloween and All Saints and All Souls Days. Although we are Catholic, we had never participated in the traditions of going to the cemetery on November 1.

Our friend Sabina took us to our first All Saints cemetery experience to St. Louis #1 and St. Louis #2, probably the two most famous ones since they are in The French Quarter.

We have no family grave to tend, but we go to take care of the grave of our dear departed friend Miss Anne. It's nothing really, just a little kindness that makes us feel good. The cemetery is very peaceful, and doing some little mundane chore, like sweeping off the headstone and leaving flowers and some trinkets, is very comforting.

Our loved ones rest far way from us, so having an adopted loved one to tend to makes us feel a part of this time and place.
All over Louisiana, people are tending the graves, washing tombs, sweeping up, planting new flowers, leaving trinkets behind.

Sabina and I made a yearly visit to St. Louis #1 and # 2. We have no one there, but we visited our favorite tombs, including Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau's. You mark an X on her tomb, asking that she guide you and grant a wish in the coming year. Sabina is no longer here (she moved away after Katrina), and I just don't feel like doing this without her.

We'd also bring candles and flowers, and candy, and sometimes little bottles of perfume. I'd bring tango things too, and a personal trinket from my jewelry box.

Though it's a family thing, it is also a solemn day for the church, and the priests come to add their blessings.

It's a custom that has been going on for nearly 300 years. It takes place during the day, unlike other ceremonies in the New Mexico that take place at night.

All Saints Day in old New Orleans - it's much the same today

And go HERE for another reprise about All Saints Day.
