Would You Use A Colored Sofa?

Color sofas and couches have made a huge comeback in the past few years. What color is your couch?

Here are a few familiar images to remind you how great colored couches are.

Blog Smackdown!

I love a lively discussion and Joni Webb has one going now. Go to Cote de Texas and check it out.

And read this article in the Wall Street Journal, entitled Watch Out For That Pillow.

In New York, I never had to have the discussion regarding a license for doing creative work for hire.

I found out that you cannot do floral design as a business without a license in Louisiana. At first I laughed. How quaint. But I found out that unlicensed talent is indeed hired, by making one person in the business take the outdated and expensive written test thus licensing the business, so that anyone in their employ can push those dangerous petals. Event design companies totally side step it.

The terms of decorator and designer have become interchangeable. Design a room, decorate a room, style a room, stage a room.

I have nothing against school and credentials. As we know it often doesn't always add up to having the talent to do the job you got the education for, or guarantee a job.

I am against the self interest of lobbies with deep pockets.

So check out Joni's post and do sign the petition. Thanks.

Live free and decorate!!!!!

The Restoration Hardware Swedish Demi Lune Chair Controversy

I did a post about one of my projects HERE, and I got so many great comments (thanks everyone!). One of them got me thinking, and I wanted to answer it fully.

Here's the comment:

HI Valorie! Love the choices you and the clients made! I am wondering if you would weigh in on the "controversy" regarding the chairs? Did you use them against your better judgement? Did you feel that they did/do not deserve the controversy? I think they add a distinctive touch in the right space, but, of course,a whole room of deconstructed items looks ridiculous-and would never exist in "real life" but even though one might be able to afford that ancient crusty one-off antique, you still might recover it or use it in a personal way. Love that your choices are always individual and reflect so much personality. Totally going to try and steal that studded wall detail somewhere!
Cheers! Meredith

Haters ganged up on this chair - Joni says. "This is all wrong, the proportions, the stain color. Hideous. Can’t imagine what they are thinking!"

In case you are wondering about the controversy, take a look at Joni Webb's post when Restoration Hardware introduced a line of deconstructed furniture. The post is entitled "Are They Serious?"

Joni says "This settee and all the other pieces in Restoration Hardware’s newest line “Deconstructed Upholstery Collection” – are all bare of the top layer of decorative fabric. I mean – seriously, WHAT??? And no, you can’t order the frame WITH fabric. You read that right."

As always I enjoyed Joni's thorough post. Lots of research, great writing, and tons of photos are always a part of Joni's blog posts. And she elicits tons of comments so you get a good idea of what people are thinking out there.

Joni especially hated the Restoration Hardware Swedish Demi Lune Chair. I did not hate what RH did. Of course I would love to use an antique or vintage piece, or maybe even a higher end reproduction like the one Tara Shaw does. And using deconstructed upholstery on furniture is nothing new or radical.

Hideous? Yes or No?

I chose to use the RH chair for my client because she liked a Klismos style dining chair. While the budget was good, there were limits, and there were places to spend, and places to be thrifty (but beautiful). I also was trying to provide an collected look with a mix of furnishings. The couple is not a fan of antiques or vintage pieces.

The client liked this style of chair HERE

I proposed the RH chairs because of the shape, the ability to customize color through a huge selection of fabrics offered, and because of price. We needed a minimum of eighth chairs, and some of the Klismos chairs came in around $2K each. We were definitely not going to spend $16K on dining chairs. And to my delight, the simpler lines of the antique look of the RH chair was attractive to the client.

The chair I chose

I chose the navy blue duck for the fabric. The color played back to the navy couch in the family room. The duck because the couple entertains their large extended family, and there are toddlers to contend with. The dark navy is forgiving of dirty little hands, and the duck is indestructible,

The navy blue couch in the family room - I keyed off this for the color choice of the dining chairs - I did not choose velvet (like the couch) because I thought it would start looking The House of Velvet - And besides the canvas duck I chose is more durable for the heavy family use the dining chairs will get - They are also used as pull-up chairs in the family room

The quality of the chair for the price is great (and we got them on sale!). The distressed wood also is forgiving of wear and tear. If it gets nicked up, it adds to the patina. We were surprised at the white stitching and considered pulling out the threads. But after a day or two, we loved the stitching because it graphically underscored the design of the chair.

I love how the chairs pair with the table - The navy blue fabric gives the chairs a custom look

I paired the chairs with a unique dining table. It's modern with a twist. The legs have brass casters like an antique, but the tripod design of the legs looks modern. The color is traditional, and the hand scraped finish makes the table more user friendly. It is an oval that has two leaves to accommodate the family. The table is done by Caracole and it's called "It's Got Legs". We purchased it locally through Eclectic Home. Clients (and I) in New Orleans support the local shops as much as possible.

It's Got Legs

As far as reacting to negative opinion about this chair, I obviously did not let it sway my decision to "sell" this chair to a client. I liked it for all the reasons stated above, and I am confident in my choices. That being said, if the chair was not right, it would have been returned. I did tell the client about the negative things bloggers had to say about the RH line. She reads the blogs. Her reaction? First she said that she trusted me, and next she said she doesn't care what others say if she likes something, and third it's her budget for us to manage in a smart way.

Don't hate me

Both the clients and I love how this chair looks in their home. And it is comfortable. I don't know how many homeowners would spend $16K on dining room chairs. I might get someone one of these days that has the criteria to do so. But in the meantime, I do not think that a lesser budget should get lesser design. My job is to make it work, and make the clients feel happy in their home and proud of how it looks.

A funny side note about Restoration Hardware.  At the Miles Redd talk and book signing the other night, he was asked a question from the audience about RH. Being the gentleman that he is, he didn't bash them, but he smirked and said real antiques are always best. Don't get me wrong, I cannot stand when any catalog room is reproduced, when a homeowner buys every piece of furniture shown either in a showroom or in a catalog picture. But I think RH  does a good job filling a moderate (to expensive) price point niche with well designed pieces. Their customer service is good too, though some pieces take way too long to be delivered.

What about you? Have you ever not used something because bloggers and their readers hate on it? Or bought something everyone loved?

Mojo Magique

What is Mojo?

mo·jo

/ˈmōˌjō/
Noun
  1. A magic charm, talisman, or spell.
  2. Magic power.
They say there is no magic in a bottle, but I think Mojo Magique may be pretty close.

Avery Fine Perfumery is having a party tomorrow night, Thursday, April 25, 5:30 - 8 PM to launch and celebrate Mojo Magique. There will be a Mojo Magique gift with every purchase and bottle signings by the creators putting Louisiana perfume on the map!

From the creators of Mojo Magique: “We grew up on the bayou,” says John Kennedy. “My mother loved growing roses. Everywhere you go, you can smell night-blooming jasmine and sweet olive. Your senses are heightened by the lush, sensual, and almost tropical smells that surround you here in Louisiana, and we wanted to incorporate that into Mojo Magique.”

The Kennedy brothers’ attention to detail didn’t stop with what’s inside the bottle. Meticulous care also went into Mojo Magique’s packaging and lettering.

Artist Doug Kennedy dipped back into the designs that put Mojo on the map, creating a magical design-scape for Mojo Magique’s box that include the flora, fauna, and archetypes both whimsical and dark that define Louisiana in the popular imagination.

Mojo Magique, a unisex fragrance composed by master perfumer Jean-Marc Challain, extends a mysterious sensibility into the realm of perfume. As dramatic and multi layered as Louisiana itself, Mojo Magique, a fresh woody floral, starts off with a burst of citrus, followed by fresh florals , a warm fig note, and a dry down of spiced woods.

Designers At Home

Ronda Rice Carmen is first and foremost a fellow blogger. She started her blog All The Best in 2007, and by the time I started mine in 2008, she was one of the "big girls" and a role model with a blog that had great content, and a loyal following. She is also a very very nice person as well as being a talented marketer, interviewer, and writer. Her blog did not begin as a branding and marketing tool, but rather as many others were: It was personal and personable, a place for Ronda to find her way in her changing world (a move to Scotland).

The home of Suzanne and Christopher Sharp from Designers At Home, by Ronda Rice Carmen
Blogs can lead you to many places, people, and things to do. Ronda's journey has led her to writing a book, "Designers At Home - Personal Reflections On Stylish Living". You can get it everywhere now, and perhaps you can meet Ronda as she makes the rounds on her book signing tour.

Designers At Home by Ronda Rice Carmen, published by Rizzoli

Have you ever dreamed of having your blog printed in book form? How great would it be to have all, the images you lovingly collected, bound in a gorgeous hardcover book, one to have and to hold, turning the pages and lingering over all your favorite images, your collection of all the best.

Page 92 from Designers At Home

Page 127 from Designers At Hone

Page 149 from Designers At Home

Well that's what you have here in DAH. Ronda compiled 50 designers in one fat compact delicious bible-size tome. She writes a short burst of an introduction for each one of them, and than frames the same five or six topics for each designer to weigh in on. The book reads like your favorite blog. The topics: Making An Entrance; Creature Comforts; Flowers and Fragrance; A Beautiful Bed; Entertaining Thoughts; Decorative Details.

Page 149 from Designers At Home

Page 145 from Designers At Home

Page 225 from Designers At Home

There are 300 photographs in as many pages, often laid out on a cozy grid with several gorgeous images to a page, so you get to see a ton of visual eye candy. There are some full and double page photographs as well. Your favorite designers (at home) are there, though some are MIA too, and I reckon Ronda just couldn't get everyone in one book. Maybe she will do volume two.

Page 225 from Designers At Home

Pages 64-65 from Designers At Home

Page 69 from Designers At Home

The most striking thing about the book, is the similarity, a common thread that weaves its way throughout the answers each designer gives to Ronda's queries. We are a homogeneous lot indeed.
Scented candles, beautiful bed linens, flowers such as orchids, peonies, roses are the favorites, and pink and white flowers are the preferred colors. A love of entertaining (by way of dinner and cocktail parties) prevails; books and art work are a big part of the lifestyle designers at home eschew.

Page 87 from Designers At Home

Page 87 from Designers At Home

Page 87 from Designers At Home

How will you use this book? Besides cuddled up on the chaise with a few satisfying hours of decor porn, I think it will also serve as a handy reference for ideas for yourself or a client. Of course it will look pretty amongst your other pretty books on the coffee table, or arranged by color on your bookshelves.

Page 87 from Designers At Home

I am so amazed by what bloggers have wrought. Once relegated to the obscure ranks of geeks and journal scribblers, we emerged as a deep talent pool and a force to be reckoned with. It makes me insanely happy when I see a blogger succeed beyond the blog.

Page 169 from Designers At Home

Page 225 from Designers At Home

Page 223 from Designers At Home

So congratulations to Ronda Rice Carmen. The sheer organizational scope of collecting all these images and interviews is mind boggling and admirable. I don't have to ask you to support Ronda, because we bloggers already support one another. But really, buy her book and post a nice review for her on Amazon. She truly deserves all our best.

For fun - answer one of Ronda's six questions in the comments:

  • Making An Entrance (how do you do it?)
  • Creature Comforts (what can't you love without?)
  • Flowers and Fragrance (what are your faves?)
  • A Beautiful Bed (what makes your bed beautiful?)
  • Entertaining Thoughts (what's your favorite party to give?)
  • Decorative Details (what are your signature details?)

Marvelous Miles Redd

It was a Marvelous Miles Redd evening darlings! A veritable bold face who's who of the New Orleans design world turned up to see Miles Redd at The Ogden. He was introduced by his long time friend, Sara Ruffin Costello, who thought the crowd was very "chicerly". It's true, there were some good dressers in the audience, starting with the grand dame of New Orleans interior design Mrs. Bremermann in the front row, who wore a pair of chartreuse trousers as an homage to Miles being the king of color.

Miles Redd and Valorie Hart in New Orleans at the Ogden

Miles gave a great talk showing slides of things that have influenced his work, touchstones from art and fashion, and classic designers Jansen, Billy Baldwin, and David Hicks. He showed his own work, explaining his thought bubbles behind each project. He is now a New Yorker, though Southern born, so it was a cool stretch for the Ogden to include him in their nod to Southern Style.

He endeared himself, not only with his conversational speaking manner and his spiffy Nantucket style garb, red trousers, no socks, and a sharp blue blazer, but also with his humor and honesty. He coughed a bit and told us not to worry, that he always coughed when he's nervous. Someone brought him a cocktail to sip and soothe. He also quipped that, "if the writing wasn't already on the wall", as a ten year old he had asked his mother for a birthday gift of book called "Hats in Vogue". He also begged her to add just a touch of chinchilla to her wardrobe.

The room was swell, set with a bar and munchies. The only glitch was that no one knew where the light switch was to turn out the lights for the slide presentation. No one could see the colors Miles was enthusing about, though his descriptions made you "see" them anyway.

He was preaching to the choir of youngish decorators in the crowd. I don't know if the Uptown ladies who were present are ready to give up what he called "their tea stained pale walls" for taxi cab yellow, but they loved him nonetheless.

Miles Redd and Valorie Hart

Who I saw: Shaun Smith, Mario Villa, Chad Graci. Evie and Phillip Clinton, Pam Dupuy, Linda Merrill (visiting NOLA on a sponsored junket for some bloggers). Mitchell Settoon, Taylor Eichenwald, Linda Flynn, Kathleen Sanchez, Heidi Shirrmann, Sue Strachan, Sabina Lewis, and many, many others.

Miles Redd signing books in New Orleans

Miles sold out of all of his hefty books, The Big Book of Chic, and signed every copy with a smile and gratitude.

Here are 5 tips from his talk:

1. It is okay to be a “maximalist.”
2. Don’t be afraid to use color, including on the floor.
3. A bar can be very welcoming.
4. Don’t forget about antiques.
5. You can always make a boring piece a chic one.

You can read the whole recap in an article at My New Orleans.
