At Home with Designers and Tastemakers

This blog post written and produced by Valorie Hart

It's been a long time since I have done a bona fide blog post. Like many, I "evolved" to Instagram and Facebook. Scrolling, not reading has become most popular. In recognition of all the old time bloggers that started a like minded community of decor and design enthusiasts, I'm doing a blog post. One of those bloggers is Stacey Bewkes of quintessenceblog.com

Stacey started blogging in 2011 (I started in 2008) and added fabulous house tours (At Home With)  beautifully produced and edited videos, forerunners of what we now think of as vlogs. She started this endeavor with her partner, the author of many, many wonderful design books, Susanna Salk. Susanna says, "I had only met Stacey for a couple of minutes when I had the idea for our video series. Of course, I already followed the much revered blog Quninessence". Susanna is the on-camera person guiding the tours and interacting with the homeowners (who for the most part are designers, decorators, and what we now refer to as tastemakers). Stacey is behind the camera, video and still. You can find these delightful videos on Quintessence, and on it's own YouTube channel: Quintessence YouTube.

Partners Susanna Salk and Stacey Bewkes

I have seen everyone of these videos. Millions have viewed them too. Every time I am captivated, inspired, and transported. So now these two have done a fabulous book together based on the videos. I used to screen capture images from the videos for my photo collection file. The quality was lacking to say the least, but I often gladly referred to these poor things. Now we have Stacey's beautiful photos in a book to have and to hold, along with Susanna's always charming, chatty, and informative writing. Wow!

At Home with Designers and Tastemakers by Susanna Salk and Stacey Bewkes published by Rizolli

From the moment you open the book with the beautiful end papers of the Schumacher wallpaper print "Plates and Platters" first seen tacked to the kitchen walls in the video house tour of Johnson Hartig's Los Angeles home, you know this book is going to be exciting. Susanna has the wonderful viewpoint of us using things seen in these marvelous homes, reinventing a version of them in one's own space. She tacked a yard of this wallpaper to her own kitchen wall, and I in turn cobbled together a few samples of it, and stapled it above my stove after I saw the video. The whole idea of paying forward beauty is a continuation of the way the bloggers of yesteryear shared ideas and encouragement.

Sixteen homes are featured in the book. A couple of my favorites are not included, Ken Fulk's in Provincetown, and Christopher Spitzmiller's Clove Brook Farm. To be fair Spitzmiller has his own fantastic coffee table book of the farm, and Fulk's body of work has also been widely published. It must of been very hard to narrow it down to just sixteen. Maybe At Home2 will be forthcoming (fingers crossed).

I "know" so many of the sweet sixteen from following their work over the years. The tagline for the title of the book is "Creating Beautiful and Personal Interiors". It's always rewarding to see how designers decorate for themselves. The common denominator is a love of beauty, of travel, of high class hoarding collecting, of entertaining, of art, of friends and family, of wit and humor, of years of experience, of a love of books, of a love of gardens.... Many of us can relate. Even though their are some deeper pockets than we mere mortals might have, the creativity if there for the taking. I love expensive wallpaper and I was only able to use it once in my bedroom in my New Orleans home, a mural from Anthropologie that coincidentally Susanna used in her son's bedroom. Otherwise I stapled inexpensive fabric to my walls, and lately did a a wall in my living room of stapled up wrapping paper with a whiff of DeGournay chinoiserie.

Jill Sharp Weeks has always been generous corresponding when I reached out to her since her days at Ballard - Even though we never met I feel the connection as I do with many of you. Her Charleston home featured in the book is a thoughtful study of the natural and organic.

Besides my admiration for this book, I admire Susanna and Stacey for sharing their vision. They financed the videos (travel, etc.) from their own pockets. They came together in their love of beautiful places. Their "overnight" success many years in the making is well deserved. My work with the photographer Sara Essex Bradley is like this. We have shared ten years of producing articles and books of things that inspire and excite us, and that we want to share.

As you scroll through these few images from the book I have added here, Susanna's home, Martin and Karen Cooper, Lulu Powers, Johnson Hartig, be excited to get the book to treasure for years to come. It will be a great reference source, an inspiring read, an impetus to recharge your home decor, and just generally fun and uplifting.

I dedicate this return from the blog crypt to the wonderful community of bloggers past and present. So many of you have stayed in touch with The Visual Vamp for so many years, and I am grateful.

India Hicks Island Style

With so much of the country having a long hard winter lasting into spring, I almost feel guilty about the warm weather in New Orleans. This is the perfect time of year when soft breezes from the gulf blow across the city fragrant with spring blossoms. It feels expansive and beach like, especially in the balmy early mornings.

Sipping coffee on my patio, I pour over the book "India Hicks Island Style". India Hicks with all her royal connections and accomplishments comes off as one of us. And by us I mean those who love to decorate and entertain and take pictures and love their life (and friends and family) and share the fruits of their labor.

There are so many lovely vignettes in the book. India and husband David have a myriad of interesting collections that are lovingly displayed throughout their Caribbean home. The party decor she creates for at home gatherings is fun and creative, and I think very inspirational (steal the look!) and something we could attempt.

This book reads like a visual family album. I keep going back to it, finding so many pieces of happiness. The press release says, "India Hicks Island Style offers a wondrous blend of her design philosophy and practical advice. Witty, inspirational, and beautifully photographed, this book will enchant and transport readers...". I agree! Add it to your summer reading list, or bring it as the perfect hostess gift.

Do You Decorate Fearlessly?

From the book by Susanna Salk (Rizzoli) Decorate Fearlessly, interior design by Valorie Hart, photo by Sara Essex Bradley
As you can see I am trying a new look for the blog. I hope you like it because I cannot figure out to go back to the old one. I thought I would try something new to refresh my spirits and get me blogging again.

Many nice things are happening for me. Alberto was so loved, and it turns out I am loved too, and so many of you have been helping me along. One of the many things I miss about Alberto is that he was my number one fan. He was so proud of my accomplishments.

From Decorate Fearlessly by Susanna Salk, interior design Valorie Hart, photo by Sara Essex Bradley

I have really been doing interior decoration/design for less than five years. Yes, I had a design business in New York for event design, and yes I am art school trained, but I started another chapter with interiors. I keep trying to convince Traditional Home Magazine that I am a young designer to be considered for their annual showcase, but so far they aren't buying it.

I have been blessed to have caught the imagination of authors, editors, and publishers in my budding career, and have been blessed to have gotten my work published. Alberto was so very proud that other people recognized my talent.

So now, the uber talented author and editor-at-large has included me in another one of her books:  Susanna Salk's Decorate Fearlessly (I was included in her Be Your Own Decorator a couple of years ago). It fits me to a T. And I am thrilled in the most geeky star struck way as possible. Alberto would have loved it.

You will love Decorate Fearlessly by Susanna Salk

From Decorate Fearlessly - I am over the moon to be on the same page with so many talented people!

Susanna has the knack for gathering images of dozens of designers across the board, compiling a  delicious compendium of images that cannot help but inspire and make you think. Decorate Fearlessly has large scale photos (which I love), divided into to handy chapters organized by rooms (Living Rooms, Entryways, Dining Rooms, Kitchens, Bathrooms, Bedrooms). There is a short quote by each designer.

OMG on the same page as Nick Olsen!

I am proud to say New Orleans was well represented. Besides myself, New Orleans designers Karina Gentinetta and Melissa Rufty are included, and New Orleans photographer Sara Essex Bradley has her images in the book as well.

So what do you do that is fearless in decorating?

Bloggers With Books

The coffee table book niche in publishing seems to be going stronger than ever. Especially hot is the category dedicated to design books. It seems like about twenty new titles come out every week on Amazon.

Bloggers are a community, and we design obsessed ones are indeed a close community. We support one in another by reading each others blogs, sharing sources and experiences, and in general lend an ear when we are endlessly enthusiastic about a world we love. So when one us crosses over from blog writing to getting a book published, the grass roots support is tremendous.

So as you get into the full swing of the holiday shopping season you might consider picking up one (or more) of these books written by bloggers for a gift to yourself, or for someone else who loves decorating.

I'll start with my book House Proud Unique Home Design Louisiana. Even if you don't live in Louisiana you will love the homes in this book, as I love each and everyone of them. I tell the back story of each home owner. The photography by Sara Essex Bradley is gorgeous, and the homes are gorgeous in an accessible way. And I give takeaways (blogger style) in each chapter for the reader to consider trying. This is a great gift for decorators, the house proud, and for those who love New Orleans.

Next, is Reflections on Swedish Style, by Rhonda Eleish and Edie Van Breems, photography by Neil Landino. These girls spearheaded the tremendous popularity of Swedish style in the USA, and this their second book on Swedish style is gorgeous and filled with great ideas of how to incorporate Swedish design into your lifestyle and decor.

Buy Reflections on Swedish Interiors HERE

Ronda Rice Carman has a very popular book out now and  it is already in its second printing called Designers At Home. She cleverly segued her blog style from her interviews with designers on All The Best into a gorgeous print book. I think she needs to do volume two! There are a ton more designers I'd like to see represented in this clever format.

Another very popular blogger, Jennifer Boles has a great book out called In With The Old, Classic Decor from A to Z. This book is destined to become a classic like her idol Dorothy Draper's book Decorating Is Fun. This is a perfect gift for anyone just starting out to decorate, or a nifty reference for the well seasoned designer.

Brook and Steve Giannetti led the way last year being one of a group of bloggers to get a book published, and if you don't have it, get it! Patina Style is a beautiful and useful book that perfectly illustrates the Giannetti's luxe organic style. I heart the Giannettis.

Another book that has been out for awhile is by the wildly popular bloggers Sherry and John Petersik of Young House Love. Their book has the same title as their blog, and it is cute as a button with tons of DIY ideas chronicled from their personal saga of setting up house.

Buy Young House Love HERE

And lastly the book My Marrakesh by Maryam Montague, another extremely popular blogger that was one of the first bloggers to get a book deal. Again, written in a breezy blogger style that makes for easy reading while offering great ideas of how to use a specific ethnic global style into your decor.

So there you have it! Go out and support a blogger today and buy their book! They would do the same for you.
I have every one of these books, and I feel a special connection as I flip through the pages of works done by friends in the blogging world.

I Heart Howard Slatkin

I got a book in the mail a couple of weeks ago. It was prettily gift wrapped, with a card enclosure, and autographed. I had already received an invitation to the launch party in New York that was just held at Bergdorf's. This book has been blowing up the internet with excitement!

Howard Slatkin took the time to do this!

I was very touched and impressed, and thought what a great PR team to put this all together, so I dropped a line to thank them, and was told that this was "all Howard", that he did this personally. This would be Howard Slatkin, the author of an incredible book called "Fifth Avenue Style", published by Vendome Press, with photographs by one of my favorite photographers Tria Giovan.

Tria Giovan at the photo shoot for Fifth Avenue Style - I can only imagine the fun she had - and the lighting issues to solve! - photo via Howard Slaktin on Pinterest

What a gentleman, or as we say in New York, what a mensch! - photo by Tria Giovan

Fifth Avenue Style is a book destined to become a collector's item. It's all about one very personal residence, and the lovingly detailed thought process of Howard Slatkin. True it is very fancy. True it is the stuff dreams are made of. But also true are the lessons to be learned in terms of organizing an interior design project that we can all find useful. And Howard shows it all - bathrooms (with a urinal shown on page 142), storage, and no hidden TVs (page 142 and page 178).

The endpapers of the book show a drawing interpreted from a fax of the floor plan that the real estate agent sent to Howard -  He made a drawing before he even saw the apartment - Howard says, "It's really not brain surgery to plan the layout of your home; you just need to think very carefully about how you live..."

Howard wanted this book to show all the tricks of the trade. He of course shows the grand public rooms, but he also talks about and shows the back areas with storage and bathrooms. The text of this book is warm, personal, and filled with practical matters. You will read it like a good novel.

The entry hall - Everything was created - You have to read about it in the book! I always look for one idea I could takeaway, and I like the brackets with the blanc de chine figures - These are extra special because Howard had his electrician put a teeny dollhouse size light bulb on each bracket hidden by a little gilded "tent" - The lighting throughout the apartment is masterful - The takeaway? Suzanne Kasler has brackets at Ballard, and I would use a battery operated tea light hidden by a little tent made of card stock, but painted to match the bracket - photo by Tria Giovan

Howard says, "Clearly, as a single guy who doesn't spend much time in Manhattan, I did not need a large apartment like this. But I had long dreamed of having a canvas on which I could express myself fully and also give full rein to the hugely gifted artisans I was fortunate to have work with me. These two factors were the motivation for the move. And let's face it, a lot of what we have is not simply based on need."

Howard says, "Nothing much goes on in the room I call the gallery, but I probably see it more frequently than any other room in the apartment, because it has to be crossed to get to the other rooms".  You can create a gallery room by floating a round table in the center of an entry hall or room - photo by Tria Giovan

When you read the book, and delve into the images, you see that Howard really makes this grand home relatable to anyone who loves to decorate - I love his explanation of his process called POD - point of departure - the one thing that can snowball an entire design of a room - The process is the same at any level and on any budget - Only with Howard, it's more fun!

The POD for the gallery was the early 19th century wall panels Howard bought in Paris - He tells us "Was I out of my mind to splurge on decorative panels when I would not only be buying the apartment but paying for a slew of construction?" - How many of you have bought something before you had a place for it?! - photo by Tria Giovan

The dedication is at the back of the book, is in the form of a handwritten note on writing paper styled on a desktop surrounded by family photos and a dish of emeralds. The line I love the most is: "In memory if my beloved late mother Corine who asked me do this book when she was ill, and who gave me the wings - and love - to soar, and so much more."

The living room - Howard says, "Welcome to my bowling alley." He combined a couple of rooms to make a large living room, albeit a long and awkward space, into something cozy- photo by Tria Giovan

Coffee table detail - You can style a coffee table in your own way with your own stuff - The sofa was designed by Howard and upholstered in cashmere! - photo by Tria Giovan

The floors in the living room came from 18th century salvage in France - Howard did not want to destroy the original honey colored finish so he flipped them over and used the reverse side - Genius! - His painter Sasha Solodukho applied many many layers of glazes and tempera paints to get the right color - Remember this idea for your own POD! - photo by Tria Giovan

To deal with the bowling alley issue in the living room several seating arrangements were used, including this banquette built into an odd niche - Note the double coffee tables - photo by Tria Giovan

This is the entrance to the screening room - I die! - The draped curtain is from the Ballet Russes - photo by Tria Giovan

The screening room - Howard likes to talk in here and hardly ever uses the concealed screen recessed into the ceiling - photo by Tria Giovan

This is the library with not one bookshelf in it!! Howard explains, "It may seem very peculiar that I refer to one of the few rooms in the apartment that does not have any bookshelves in it as the library, but it is indeed a room where I escape to read, and it feels like a library to me - dark, warm, and comforting." - photo by Tria Giovan

The dining room - My oh my!!!! Again he bought the rug in Paris, before he had the room to put it in - The takeaway - Buy what you love, and you will always find a place for it - This chapter in the book will make every plate and china queen swoon - Howard has several wonderful collections to fit any and every occasion - photo by Tria Giovan

Howard tells us, "I thought the best color for the wood trim and paneling in the dining room would be the same chalky white as in the living room. I remember sitting on the floor of the room after the painting was finished -- a complex paint job involving layers of gesso and chalky white glazes, brilliantly done by Torie Burke and her gifted team. But with the gilded-wood edging in the room it looked awful --like a set from a 1950s B movie --very ordinary and no style." He changed it when a pair of antique doors in green arrived for the room. "...it was a 'eureka' moment - that green was exactly the right color..." - The takeaway - don't be afraid to change something that didn't turn out as planned - photo by Tria Giovan

Bookshelves ended up in the dining room instead of the library- Howard uses the dining table to spread out large books when not in use for dining - photo by Tria Giovan

Howard loves to lunch with one guest at this small table in the corner of the dining room - photo by Tria Giovan

Here we go into the master suite - photo by Tria Giovan

Howard says, "My bedroom is the most important room in the apartment for me. During a busy day, just the thought of a handsome, welcoming sanctuary to return to is a comfort."- photo by Tria Giovan

A 19th century steel dog bed in the master suite - Howard tells us, "...never been used by any of my pups. Winnie my Norfolk Terrier, won't even look at it."- photo by Tria Giovan

One section of storage in the master suite closet - So Gatsby!!! photo via Howard Slatkin on Pinterest

Don't you just want to do this is Howard's closet!!!- from the movie The Great Gatsby with Leonardo DiCaprio

These could be Howard's shirts! - from the original movie (and my favorite) The Great Gatsby with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow

The back hall leads to the guest suite - The takeaway? Make hidden spaces pretty

The guest suite - Howard explains, "I think of a guest room as a sanctuary that can -- and should -- be a bit of fantasy."- photo by Tria Giovan

Howard says, "I like guests to be greeted by flowers from my  garden, a scented candle (VV note: there is a candle storage room in the apartment!), and a panoply of personal care products." You can do this in your guest room too - photo by Tria Giovan

This is a partial view of the kitchen which is to die for! You have to get the book to see all the elegant storage for dishes, glassware, linens, silver, pots and pans - it is awesome - photo by Tria Giovan

There is a great video tour of Howard's apartment done by Susanna Salk. You can find it on the terrific blog Quintessence.

The best thing to takeaway from this book is the joie de vivre of Howard Slatkin.
