Exotic by birth, and reared in New Jersey, with a west coast base, she embodies the citizeness of the world.
She is wildly successful, with a flag ship store in Los Angeles. She has furniture and fabric lines available to other designers and decorators. She is respected as an antiquarian, which comes from her life long love affair with collecting beautiful old things.
Her appearance is particular, and often remarked upon. She is an impeccably groomed woman. Her personality is warm, and quirky. She is not a client whore, that is she only takes on projects of she which describes as fun, and mostly doing the work for friends. I often wonder if I would prefer working with someone I don't know (at first), as to working with a friend on a project. Who would be more demanding?
I just ordered her book from amazon, The Private House.
The reviews either praise it as the second coming, or pan it as a pile of over rated junk ha ha.
She sounds like my kind of gal...
These images are pretty, and intrigue me. But more than the pretty rooms, the woman herself has a fascinating story to tell. You can read more HERE
Architectural Digest has a pretty good interview where she tells all HERE
BTW did you know that AD is the new domino? The domino web site is gone forever, and when you try to go to it you are automatically directed to AD! It's kind of funny since domino readers liked to distance themselves as far as possible from the AD aesthetic.
April 3 - Hi Everyone - There was a little confusion on my part about the images I used. As I said, I am getting around to knowing Rose Tarlow, and maybe after I get her book, my eye will be more attuned. My apologies to both designers, and to the readers of this blog.
Anyway a faithful and very kind reader cleared it up for us and I thank her:

I thought this was a beautiful article in Veranda, and the good news it that Veranda now has a great revamped website. Here is a link to the article:http://www.veranda.com/room-decorating/paris-inspired-interior-design. I can understand why Rose Tarlow was connected with these pictures, because designer Betty Burgess (who lives in Atlanta and used to work with Dan Carithers) used some of Rose Tarlow's exceptional furniture line in this house. The dining room table is by Rose Tarlow for Melrose House.I am a huge fan of Rose Tarlow's furniture line (as well as Betty Burgess' work), and have my eye on that side table that was in 'Something's Gotta Give' - it is beautifully crafted, but very, very expensive. Have a great weekend!
Thanks for the continuing education, Miz V. I'm liking what I see, and I can't wait to dig into the world of Rose and her pile of junk.
ReplyDeleteEVERYONE, PLEASE LOOK TO YOUR RIGHT: Hey, I just looked at the sidebar and clicked on Eddie Ross' website to see the photos from Cocktail Night Chez Vamp!
ReplyDeleteGreat post, I just didone on the Beverly Hills showhome; Rose did the Library with David Phoenix.

ok, thats seriously like my dream kitchen!
ReplyDeletethe home has such a good feeling about it.
ReplyDeleteit is elegantly designed in a way that is not stiff,
and very yummy indeed !
Rose Tarlow did not design the rooms featured in your posting.
ReplyDeleteI just recently read her book last month (and immediately talked to Joni about it, who introduced me to Rose in the first place) and LOVED it! The book is amazing -i read it twice! I hope you enjoy it as much as me -she's a very poetic and descriptive author.
ReplyDeleteLove those beams. WOW!
ReplyDeleteI think you will like it. While she does great neutral rooms, there are some with stronger colors - especially green - that are fab.
ReplyDeleteDear Anon,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the page hit!
I found these photos on Google Images attributed to Rose Tarlow.
If you know the designer of these lovely rooms, please let us benefit from your vast knowledge.
xo xo
Rose is impeccable yes! Impeccably tailored! WOW. I love the white cabinets with the glass fronts just off the dining area and within the kitchen space. Certainly a different space than the norm for a spiked red-head but, I love it. Talk about restrictions for the grand-babies! Keep the entertainment coming. Linda
ReplyDeleteps---vamp, the annon above with the inferior complex of not putting herself out there is not me. I just happened to follow your last entry coincidentally. love ya linda
ReplyDeleteyou need to remove that house...It was in Veranda and she DID NOT decorate it...if I were the designer i would be Peeeeeeeeved.
ReplyDeleteYou bloggers need to do more research when you do articles.Joni at Cote de Texas is also guilty of this.
Girls do your homework
Anon 5:50, thanks for the page hit!
ReplyDeleteAnd lighten up! This is a blog not a university course.
And again if you know who the designer is, please tell us. Veranda hardly tells us anything.
And if the designer sees this, I apologize to you and Rose Tarlow for my mistake, and will rectify it as soon as I get some solid information.
xo xo
Betty Burgess is the designer.

ReplyDeleteValorie: Thank you for all the warmth and beauty you add to my days. I appreciate you so much and look forward to all that you offer through your unique blog. You have opened up and made yourself vulnerable in order to share with us in a personal way. Sometimes you teach, and sometimes you learn along the way and invite us to join you. It hurts me to see you attacked. You are so undeserving of the disrespectful treatment this anonymous commenter is dumping on you.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous: Valorie openly states on her blog that if she posts something amiss, either through not knowing to whom the credit is due or through being misinformed by another source, she will gladly rectify it. You don't have to be unkind to her. Also, it is possible for you to contact her via email to point out an error rather than try to beat her down or humiliate her on the comments page.
Hello, Valorie!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for inviting us into your home last week. I had such a wonderful time visiting with all the fun guests. Take care and I hope to see you again soon!
Sara
Thank you for introducing us to her design! Beautiful images you've shown us! Please come over to my blog and give me your opinion. . .
ReplyDeleteThis isn't the first time this blog had a crediting crisis.

GEEZ - what did I do - let me know! ok? I spend days researching, days. agonizing over every word and picture. let me know when I make a mistake - and I'll correct it immediately. i'm just curious what you are talking about exactly - email me with the charge and I'll fix it. or put it here, but I probably won't be back to read it. so email me. I really never put anything out quickly just to put it out there.

Well Valorie, like all interesting people in the public forum, you're being harassed and cyber-stalked. Better keep an eye out for the paparazzi too!
ReplyDeleteSigh. . . . . (takes a sip of coffee and looks on the bright side). . . at least Anonymous is a faithful reader of your blog!
Thanks Things That Inpsire for clearing up the Rose Tarlow issue!
ReplyDeleteNow I can sleep again ha ha.
I'll add your great information (presented in a friendly manner we can all relate to) to the post.
And Joni, don't worry darlin'.
EVERYONE appreciates the tremendous body of work you present for all of us to enjoy and learn from. You are a great teacher and role model!
No matter how much we research, something always slips through the cracks. Too bad it's not the Anon haters slipping ha ha.
xo xo
Oh, before I forget, Anonymous: This issue of mistaken credit is NOT a "crisis." Hurricane Katrina was a crisis, the world's current economy is a crisis. You need to do your homework.
ReplyDeleteTo anal Anon, read this exchange in the Comments section of the post you attack the Vamp for:

I created this unique small luxury hotel. It is a nice compliment to see this blog and realize other still like the little oasis I caused.
Before designing this hotel I was a top makeup artist and in the past few years have gone back to that. I now live in Atlanta, New York and Paris where I once again paint the faces of the most interesting and beautiful women in the world.
I hope you will all get an opportunity to visit the Blue horizon because it is still as lovely as ever.

Dear James,
First, thank you so much for writing to my humble blog!
When I saw your story in the AD archives I was charmed by what you had done, and thought my readers would enjoy knowing all about you and Blue Horizon.
I would love for you to write a little story for us about your current projects - those faces of the most interesting and beautiful women in the world!!!
I do hope to make my way to Blue Horizon one day (and I hope my fellow bloggers will be inspired to do so too).
Again, thank you for sharing your impressive talent with us.

PS For anyone wanting to read the entire article I excerpted, go to the AD web site. ( That includes you Mr. or Ms. Anal Anon)

Now go sit on maison21's boyfriend, fourth photo on the right sidebar.
Hey Annon... where's your blog? You tell em Carey, and everybody else!
ReplyDeleteWe try hard to make our posts as accurate and lovely as possible, but sometimes we make an unknowing innocent mistake. She is obviously humble and did not do it on purpose. And she graciously corrected the information soon as she could. Please do not be so hard on her!
I LOVE the interior design photos! Who ever designed the room, who ever they were inspired by, or had the opportunity to benefit from with use of their furniture, its all very very beautiful.
Visual Vamp I Love Your Place!
Oh my.......I just want to say that Rose's book is one of my favorites and I have read it cover to cover - hope you find the time to do the same and enjoy it! I love your blog and your attitude!
