New Orleans New Elegance

Kerry McCaffety is a fixture when it comes to writing and photographing beautiful books about New Orleans. New Orleans New Elegance is her ninth book. It is one to have and hold. There are images of designers work that has never been seen before, and also many images of the interior design work of our old favorites.

What's new from the old is the pale palette that has replaced the moonlight and magnolias style of overwrought red bordello rooms once associated with New Orleans. Pale rooms have had a foothold here for the past ten years in the Uptown homes that once dripped with ornate window treatments, Tester beds, and Victorian parlor sets.

The establishment designers of New Orleans are well represented: Gerrie Bremermann. Holden and Dupuy. John Cherstia, Melissa Rufty, Allain Bush, Karina Gentinetta, John Vaccari, Kevin Gillentine, and many others. More than forty houses and apartments are featured from all parts of the city—the French Quarter, the Warehouse District, the Garden District, and the multiple neighborhoods that comprise Uptown.

The two  fabulous "reeds" and style doyennes weigh in: Julia Reed with the introduction (which I can't wait to read), and a witty promo blurb from Mimi Read.

I beg to differ about the well spring that New Orleans drinks from not being influenced and sometimes copied, by not only  influences in New York and Los Angeles, but by influences from Paris, Spain, Italy, Germany, Ireland, Haiti (Saint Domingue back in the day) Africa, and everywhere else for that matter. This is a port city of immigrants who brought their traditions that have formed the unique style that makes New Orleans so different and special - New Orleans is once again a fashionable place (it was a fashion trend setter in the early 1800's copying the latest styles from Paris) that follows and copies fashion from everywhere, especially now after Katrina with an influx of young transplants, new talent choosing to make it their home and being a part of the rebirth and rebuilding - Their energy has decidedly changed and updated the style of New Orleans in interior design and decor, and fashion, bringing it into the 21st century with a trend setting verve

Here are some of the very fashionable homes featured in New Orleans New Elegance. There is a great album on Kerri's web site that I am sure will excite all you bloggers and Pinterest folks, and encourage you all to buy this book.

Somebody Buy This Fabric Please!

Maggie Overby has an Etsy shop. I know her through her sisters and Mom and Dad who live here in New Orleans. She has done some great sewing projects for them, and then did some great ones for me too.

Maggie Overby made the cute pillows - She could make you some too

She knows I like color, and remembered some orange accents in my living room, so she told me about a amount of yardage of some very cute fabric she has. She also knows I am a girl often on a budget, and the price of this beautiful fabric is incredible.

Get this cute fabric from Maggie Overby - It works on both sides

I don't have anything to use it for, but maybe one of you out there does. Contact Maggie via her Etsy web site, or email me and I will pass your email onto her. Or pick up something from her Etsy store, like the baby shower bundle.

Get this Baby Sower Bundle from Maggie Overvby, for a gift to give that is unique and hand made with love

I love the cute pillows she made with this fabric, don't you? Somebody get this fabric. It's discontinued, so when the bolt is gone, it's gone forever. It would be great to reupholster a chair with.

The Circle Game

Who would think that circle paintings would start such a fuss? I got a ton of private emails regarding the I Heart Karina Gentinetta post.

I am the Circle Queen!
There are many. many swell and gracious Southern women I know and love, and who have been very good to me, the damn Yankee interloper. And then there is a group of women here in New Orleans that still think they are in a college sorority akin to what I call the Southern Belle Mafia.

And I am the Circle King and the rest of y'all are copy cats
A certain person called upon her sisters to shun and intimidate the person who dared to paint circles on a drop cloth. There were hate emails and boycotting of the drop cloth painter's shop in New Orleans. She eventually closed it rather than take the hate.
The drop cloth that dropped a ton of hate
How could one know that an eleventh hour DIY project would cause such a stink. The NY Times called without much notice, to do an article about a house, a home very much unfinished with bare walls. So that's how the infamous drop cloth was whipped up for the photo shoot.

Don't hate me because I make beautiful circles
Anyway, in the spirit of fun, and to lighten things up, I am showing you a ton of circle images. It seems it has been a very popular motif since the cave man or cave woman drew on the walls. And it still is. But only in New Orleans.

Another ancient cave drawing

Stop thief! A rubbing taken from a cave drawing

Cave drawing on a rock - Was the cave artist named Keith?

School children in Paris with their paintings of the two hot design trends that every blogger wants

This will soon be outlawed in schools in Louisiana

A child's circle painting - Don't send the kid hate mail

Kelly Wearstler draws on her cave walls, or did her kids do it?

She obvs stole it from Keith Haring who stole it from a cave man

And Nicole stole it from both of them!

A blogger lifted the idea for her shop

And another blogger swiped it from her

And another blogger in New Orleans stole it from her, although he kept it on the down low from the SBM

Look, I appreciate talent, but sometimes you have to know when to give a painting to a sister who lost everything in Hurricane Katrina.

And as I keep telling you, nothing is original, so take inspiration from the best, and pray you have the talent to pull it off and make it unique because it comes through your experience. Talent is forever. That's what I was taught in art school.

And thank you all for your comments and private emails. I am locking those emails in the vault to be published upon my death in a book called "I've Seen Your Blog and I'm Still Laughing".

Update! Bronson Pinchot - The Camelback Chair

UPDATE! I think Bronnie must be reading because a new photo was added to his web site/blog of the library for his art reference books. Thank you Sharon in Chicago for sending it to me! I also found another photo of a little valence in his kitchen that is made from the same fabric he used for the panels for the windows in the library (and for the sofa pictured below). I think he said the fabric comes from some old bed hangings. He seems to be using it all through the house.

The art reference library of Bronson Pinchot- You can see the book shelves designed to show the front of the book instead of the spines, and the back of that yummy camelback chair
This is the fabric Bronnie used for the curtain panels in the library, shown here used as a valence over the kitchen window

This is Bronson Pinchot's kitchen - You can see the antique blue check fabric that he seems to have a ton of

 What I posted previously:

Any chair or sofa or couch with a curved back with a center "hump" might be considered a camelback.
But like anything else, there are distinctions between some awful contemporary pieces from the big box chain stores, and the excellent antique or vintage pieces.

My favorite is camelback chair is one with a full upholstered arm, more of the 18th century kind. It's like a mini camelback sofa.

Bronson Pinchot's gorgeous 18th century camelback chair reupholstered in fabric from 1830 - He said the chair was skanky before it was redone and  is worth $10K - I found this photo from the web site  his upholsterer Kinetic Comfort Upholstery who did an amazing job on this fabulous old chair -

My newest heartthrob Bronson Pinchot has such a chair that he featured in Episode 8 Last But Not Least on the DIY Network  show The Bronson Pinchot Project. He was doing a room that he called a library for his art collection and his collection of books.

Sadly DIY Network doesn't do much in web support of their shows. No way to watch an episode, and certainly no photos. And Bronnie is a naughty boy because he started a blog and doesn't do a thing with it. He should be posting photos and back stories.

Look at this gorgeous couch somewhere in Bronson Pinchot's  spectacular Greek Revival home - The same fabric is used that the curtains for the library are made from - I got this photo from the blog Good &  Pretty written by his excellent seamstress Nicole, and have asked her to send more photos of the work she is doing for Bronson along with a some tech tips

So I had to dig deep to find a picture of Bronnie's chair. He had it upholstered in fabric from 1830. Of course he loves the old rips that have old repairs in the way of a spot hit with the darning needle. He likes to show these in a prominent space.

Old fabric can be tricky to work with. Sometimes it is just too rotted away, even when it looks stable. I would love to hear about how Bronson chooses the antique fabric he uses. He also used a beautiful blue and white check woven textile from the 1800's to make curtain panels, and yet another fabric that he fashioned into a valance. Alas I have no photos of the window treatments.

This is a photo of another example of a camelback chair in a more modern interpretation done by the excellent New Orleans designer Melissa Rufty as shown in the fab new book Be Your Own Decorator by Susanna Salk

Bronnie likes the fabric not to be pulled too tight on the reupholstered pieces. I believe he said to the upholsterer: "Don't make it look like a Hollywood face lift". He likes there to be some give to the fabric, as if the chair had been sat in for a long time.

The whole room by Melissa Rufty as seen in Be Your Own Decorator - If you see a camelback chair like this one or Bronnie's, snap it up - If you can't use it let me know and I'll take it off your hands

I love how the library came out. The bookshelves are awesome. You'll have to catch a rerun, or find Episode 8 online somewhere.

Do You Love Ballet Pink?

I have some cherry blossom branches arranged in the entry hall, and they have blown open. Each flower reminds me of a fat  ballet pink tutu.

The cherry tree branches with their ballet pink tutu blossoms in my entry hall

Ballet pink is that evocative color, the palest of pinks, almost with a flesh undertone.

You can get these pretty pink shoes on Etsy

As young dancer in training I wore my fair share of ballet pink slippers and tutus. I disliked the color as a child very much, much preferring the fiery mother color of red, or the severe black of a basic leotard or a pair of black fishnet dance tights the older girls got to wear.

Everything is beautiful at the ballet

Now, as I myself become more pale with growing older, I  have mellowed and love ballet pink as much as I see the beauty in any color.

Martha Stewart did the ballet pink nightstand, which has the perfect flesh undertone

So here's little ballet pink round up of images to ease us into Easter/Passover week. Get some branches with blossoms for your home this week.
