Do You Really Think Designers Personally Have Nice Homes?

Do designers and decorators themselves live in nice homes? Do they decorate and design for themselves, or live spartan lives in hovels, garrets, and plain boxes? For the most part I think they live well. Often they use their own homes as a way to try out ideas that might possibly be translated into a future project for a client.

Brazilian architect and designer Sig Bergamin crafted a vibrant living room in the São Paulo home he shares with architect Murilo Lomas.

Architecteural Digest has a nice online feature showing 27 designers homes. I chose a few of my favorites. Go on over to AD and choose yours.

Design team Paolo Moschino and Philip Vergeylen revamped their  flat near London’s Victoria station - They are influenced by the apartment Billy Baldwin did for Cole Porter

A  modern Los Angeles getaway is the home of architect and designer Daniel Romualdez

Architect Jorge Elias filled his 17,000-square-foot home in the Jardim Europa neighborhood of São Paulo with extraordinary antiques and images.

Russian architect Dmitry Velikovsky created a refined yet exotic look for his Moscow penthouse

Inside a glass tower overlooking the Manhattan skyline, Todd Alexander Romano created a high-impact design for his 600-square-foot studio

Decorator Suzanne Kasler  recently renovated her Regency-style house

Axel Vervoordt and his wife, May, share a graceful apartment in a 15th-century palazzo on Venice’s Grand Canal

The living room of Nate Berkus’s duplex in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village - This has evolved since it was on the cover of Elle Decor a few years ago

What do my favorites say about me? What do yours say about you?

Moroccan Ideas

Your thought bubbles please...

I'm working on a sitting room for a little girl that will have Moroccan inspired seating. The room adjoins her bedroom connected by a hall and a bathroom, a kind of suite of rooms.

I like the upholstered look of the base and this seat cushion

The walls of the rooms have been upholstered in fabric:  In the bedroom the  accent wall behind the bed, the connecting hallway has another accent wall, and the sitting room got the whole works, with all the walls upholstered. It looks amazing.

So now custom seating is being considered for the seating room, so I have been pulling images for ideas.

Nothing quilted like this, just to show proportion

The sitting room will undoubtedly become a place where the whole family and their friends will want to hang out. There's a big flat screen TV in this room.

Pillow,s pillows, pillows

Stay tuned. There will be a reveal when the project is done. In the meantime, got any ideas to share regarding my Kiddie Kasbah?

Stylists - Things To Avoid

As a stylist I have been guilty of overusing certain things. When a shot starts to look futzy I think "no more green apples".

I was recently sent a stylists brief by a photographer who works with a major European magazine. It had some good suggestions, but what made me smile were the things to avoid for props. A verbal one was also added to the list: No Buddhas.

Here's the list from the magazine:

THINGS TO AVOID
Some things have been done to death, so please avoid:
*Clothes on beds.
*Dress hanging on wardrobe door.
*Towels draped over baths.
*Shoes by sofas.
*Handbag by armchair/sofa.
*Cup of tea balancing on sofa/chair.
*Owners reaching into cupboards.

Other no- no’s
Robert’s Radios.
Trays on beds.
Unopened bottles of wine with glasses.

I might add: Too many books, skulls, Foo Dogs, and of course green apples. What do you think? It's hard out there for a stylist.

The blog that really keeps me in line is Catalog Living. Every possible styling equation gets its due caption. Check it out.

from Catalog Living: "Frankly Gary, I’ve been so busy I’m amazed I’ve found the time to keep our twine spool jar full."

Parade's End

Have all you Downton Abby geeks (of which I am one) found the BBC show Parade's End transplanted to HBO? I caught a marathon of sorts the other day, and I was like whoa what is this?!
And speaking of Downton, what did you all think of the finale? There wasn't the buzz I thought there would be. Are we all in shock?

Anyhoo, here are some images from Parade's End. Try and find it. I think you will enjoy it.

Dreamy

There's a big house

There's breakfast

There's big hats and tea pouring and the help

There's banter

There's dinner parties

There's war and soldiers

There's dancing
There's the fight for women's right to vote

There's beautiful dresses

And beautiful sets

Parade's End on HBO - Check it out

Let me know what you think of Parade's End, and what you think of the Downton Abby finale.
